What does your homeschool schedule look like?
Families I work with personally always ask how long to homeschool each day and how many days per week.
The answer is dependent on the age of your child as well as your state/locale laws. Some states or localities may require 5 days a week or certain hours per day so always check that out before you start.
Until 3rd grade, we only did lessons Mon-Thurs for less than two hours a day. On Friday, we had our homeschool co-op which included classes, playground time and what I counted as ‘school’ activities.
For a young child in first or even second grade, it can be overwhelming to do main lesson 5 days a week. (Though some may love it.) I feel we are always “schooling” at home. There are so many spontaneous
learning moments happening all time! You, too, are probably schooling a lot more than you think.
I recommend to the moms I coach to use a journal, notebook or planner to track and see for themselves. For one week, they would write down everything they consider a teaching moment/lesson/opportunity. They always say they are doing way more than they thought they were.
It doesn’t have to be taught only during main lesson.
After 3rd grade we did a full 5 days a few including the co-op. (We would school in the morning and go to the co-op after lunch).
How long should main lesson be? That also depends on the age of the child.
For the early years/early grades, circle time can be 15-20 minutes followed by a main lesson about the same length. I rarely taught a main lesson over 30 minutes until later in the grades. Of course, it all depends on how quickly your child works, paints, draws, etc…but the actually teaching and storytelling isn’t that long.
Don’t be surprised if you are finished by lunchtime. Schedule an elective-type lesson in the afternoon like music, handwork, foreign language, or a craft.
Even in 5th grade, our total main lesson/circle would be no longer than 2 hours.
