Last weekend I took my “mid-way” inventory of what we have
accomplished and what is left.
At first, I felt like we hadn’t done enough, but after looking back
and checking my yearly plan, we are making good headway!
No, we didn’t get to all I had originally planned (we never do).
But, we got most of it and all of the main ideas.
Recapping…
Math: we did a lot of math review and working to
solidify those pesky times tables (moms this is the key
to all math going forward to don’t skimp..just keep
practicing) We began long multiplication and more
mental mental and word problems.
Language Arts: Norse Myths… we have had fun with these stories
painting, modeling, cooking, and using maps to talk about the people
and where they lived. The stories are rich and fit this age perfectly.
I also introduced “reading independently” for main lesson.. they each
read stories throughout the day that we discuss. One likes it, the other
does not and wants me telling.. but it is a step toward more independent
school.
Social Studies: Mapping and orientation in the world.. starting from our homes
and moving out, town, city, state, etc..
Grammar/Writing: They wrote their first book report (though that was such a hoot
as they first ‘copied’ the book jacket review
They also starting writing in a journal.
Reviewed the parts of speech and worked with that, they really get this nicely.
Copy work and more writing needed including cursive practice.
Time to get down to serious homeschooling business this winter
