Living in a Bubble?

Living in a Bubble?
As my now 10 year old girls are beginning to stretch their wings, I sometimes find myself hanging tighter to the rules.

Our current issue is music.

They want to listen to more current pop songs and to me, most of these are inappropriate. (Yes, this seems to be one of my favorite words lately, the girls tease me.)

On one hand, I remember my own 10 year old self listening to the radio and singing all the songs I could get my head around.

Did my mom have the same concerns?

Did she listen to the words and cringe as I have been doing?

I am not ready to let them have carte blanche at 10.

There are some songs that are fine and fun.

But, more often than not I feel the lyrics nagging at me saying, No.. this is not appropriate for a 10 or 11 year old, even if they aren’t understanding it.

So, there is a give and take.. we work out an acceptable station on Pandora that blends what they like with what I feel comfortable with.

*Sigh* I know this is only the beginning of compromise that we will work through these next vital years.

Would love to hear your thoughts and challenges..post below

I understand your concerns.  I will say that It is more effective to let them hear the song and right after explain what the song’s message is, and do they align with the morals and values they now know to be truth according to what you tought them.  Then ask why the message does not align with what they (and you ofcourse) don’t hold as true and pure.  I have boys and I dont homeschool but I know that even when they are homeschooled, we still need to teach them how to process all things that are out there.  I have even told one of my sons, the song has a great beat, but how about the words? do they speak of who you are and what you are about?  My son is 8.
