9/10 is a very interesting age...especially for girls. My 14 year old definitely went through a few phases during that time that were both frustrating and alarming, but somehow her father and I managed to make it through. Like you, we tried more outside time. We gave her more opportunities to have a 'say' in things...more choices. Instead of 'would you like chocolate or vanilla ice cream', she got to choose more entire meals (and of course that meant she would be more inclined to want to help make them). When she got bossy with others, we adopted the 'talking stick'...whoever has the stick may state 1 wish/desire/question/critique (known as a complaint to you and me)/etc.

For example, if she was bossing a younger member around, we'd stop and hand her the stick and say 'OK, please state 1 thing and rephrase it so it is respectful' then the younger member would have a chance for rebuttal if needed with his/her own stick moment. It DID help slow down the bossing/arguments quite a bit...as well as forced everyone to be mindful of how they interacted with each other, becoming better listeners and becoming more respectful of each other. It wasn't always perfect, but it did help. Good luck!

Donna I tried the Farmgirl Fare bread recipe and I love it! I do prefer whole grains but sometimes you just want a good slicing bread- so hard to have a sandwhich on crumbly or slightly-risen bread!!! That one sure does the trick, and I hope to experiment adding some whole grains to it. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Holly,

I don't know of any special traditions, but in the book Festivals, Family and Food there are
a few pages of sings and games that can be done. I think it is however you want to
ring in the new year for your family.

Blessings,

Donna

During this last week before Christmas, I hope to give time. Time to my son; time to actually play with him for extended periods, letting him take the lead with me following and contributing. Time to my husband; really listening to what he has to say, being truly present and focused with him. Time to my inner being; to get re-centered. Time to worship, time to play, time to help, time to pray, time spent appreciating and living in each moment.

I've been trying to give by doing little things here and there this year. We are donating to Toys for Tots as usual and my daughter helped pick out the gift. I'm making a donation of diapers to a newly opened shelter for women and children in the hopes of making a difference in their lives this holiday season. And most importantly of all, I'm trying to carry the true holiday spirit with me this year and not get caught up in the stress that so many people experience. We've scaled back on presents and have done a family oriented advent activity each day to try and truly enjoy this time of year rather than focus on the commercialism of Christmas.

We have already passed on many toys in anticpation of Christmas (and as a result of reading Simplicity Parenting -- my goal this year was to simplify), and it was so encouraging to hear you talk about that very thing during your Holiday Party online. It inspired me to go through even more toys and pass them on.

We live in New Zealand and are lucky enough to celebrate Christmas during our summer months. It really is very lovely to come together for Christmas get togethers at the beach or warm evenings at home.

We love the book Celebrating Advent and Christmas in the Southern Hemisphere by Collette Leenman. Collette is a retired Kindergartener and has created this lovely book with all her experience and desire to embrace our local flora and fauna in this traditionaly Northern Hemisphere festival. You know it's crazy people here still put fake snowflakes on their windows and trees! Collette has included so many photos and ideas for celebrating advent and christmas while camping or at the beach with what is found there. Sticks, shells, flax and branches. We love it!
